Shine Some Light

Maybe it started with the movie “Taken”.

Maybe it was the growing number of topic-related articles and news-stories that kept popping up on my Facebook feed, on msn.com, and on countless news stations.

Maybe it all started when I first visited South East Asia and witnessed children, hanging out on street corners far too late at night.

Maybe it was the day my daughter was born and I realized I would do ANYTHING to protect her and make sure she understands her true worth and value.

Or maybe it was all of it:  countless pieces that have stuck with me – impacted me – over the years.

Regardless of when or where it “started” for me, the fact remains, that I have become increasingly more aware and alarmed at the prevalence of Human Trafficking and Sexual Slavery around the world today.  And it’s time to try to do something about it.

As many of you know, in December, I participated in an international campaign called “Dressember”, which was aimed at raising awareness – and funds- to help end Human Trafficking and Sexual Slavery, by partnering with the International Justice Mission.

Every day in December, I wore a dress – to remind myself, and others – that slavery still exists, and that I won’t pretend it doesn’t just to feel more comfortable in my own small part of the world.  Many of you, and others, sponsored me financially and donated your funds generously to the International Justice Mission which is able to fund individuals and organizations who are working, at the ground level, in a hands-on way, to end trafficking and exploitation around the world.

I don’t want to be a “bandwagon” supporter of this cause.  I want to stay committed to bringing about real change.  So – be prepared for more posts, more articles, and more testimonies on Facebook.  Be prepared for more movements (#enditmovement), and more campaigns, and more tweets.  Be prepared to feel inundated with information until you can’t help but want to get involved.

And consider what your role is. Or could be.

Ask yourself, how can you “be the change you wish to see in the world”?

And while you’re at it – ladies – buy some dresses.  Stock up.

Take the challenge with me in December 2014.

Let’s shine some light in the darkness.
