Welcome here everyone! As I mentioned in a previous post, Christmas is my favourite time of the year, and one of the things I enjoy the most about this season is being able to create an inviting space for family and friends.
I know there are people in my life who think I go overboard with the Christmas decor, but this is just one of those creative outlets that I let myself enjoy.
This year, I was really inspired by the minimalist/Scandinavian trend – which, for me, means lots of greenery, monochromatic decor, simple details, and cohesion. On that note, I hope you all enjoy this little Holiday Home Tour! I’m really happy with how everything has turned out… so far 😉
Main Floor Details
There’s a part of me that has always wanted a real tree, but my mom is actually quite allergic, so we have opted for artificial trees. The good thing about going this route is that I can put everything up a little earlier than I could if I was dealing with live greenery. Although it really would have been stunning given my current obsession with this Scandinavian trend!
Are you wondering why I only buy books with white covers?! 😉 The other day my sister was visiting, and I was lamenting how dark that corner felt, wishing I had all white books, when she suggested that I turn them all the other way so the spines were facing inward! I wasn’t sure if I would like it at first, but I actually really like the look of it, and it has certainly brightened that otherwise dark corner! Granted, it has made finding books an entirely new adventure.
This year I also tackled a little DIY project – an Advent Tree! The kids absolutely love searching for their special treat-box each morning and seeing what’s inside!
Although my personal homestyle continues to evolve, I’ve often described it as being “high contrast”. I love black, white, and grey basics, with added pops of colour throughout. I also love natural wood details, marble-inspired accents, and a lot of neutral tones to balance out the intensity of the black elements. It’s a blend of hard and soft, and although I am no where near perfecting it – and there are many areas of my home I’m still working on – I love seeing our house transform into the home I’ve envisioned. I am especially fond of our dining room, and this gorgeous live-edge dining room table we purchased from The Hudson’s Bay Company two years ago. It’s one of my favourite places to spend time with family and friends.
The soft glow of the tree in the evening gives me all the feels!
Our son Ben has been obsessed with the Polar Express Train since he was a toddler, so receiving an electric version as a Christmas present last year was pretty much the most exciting thing that has ever happened to him. This year, it’s the perfect addition to our Christmas tree!
It’s in the Details…
It’s in the details, as far as I’m concerned! I know it’s very popular to change out your decor from season to season; to be honest, I don’t do a lot of this – certainly not for any other holiday – and even at Christmas I prefer to add special details that compliment what’s already there, as opposed to completely swapping out my decor. This pom/jingle bell garland, from Anthology Home Collection in Saskatoon, was actually purchased for our baby nursery last January, but I decided to hang it above the fireplace this year for an added touch of whimsy this Christmas. I’m also a huge lover of throw pillows, so I’ve started buying seasonal pillow shams, and popping a couple of pillows I already have inside to change things up – which is far more cost effective than buying new inserts, and also means I don’t need to dedicate an entire closet to throw pillows for storage (haha… but really…). I get most of my pillow shams from Chapters Indigo and HomeSense – I just love their seasonal selections! 😉
Incase you can’t tell, I’m also really loving little villages this year. I actually have three – one that I just realized I didn’t even post here. I think you get the gist though. 😉 I love how they are clean, classic, and also a throwback to the Christmas villages that were so popular when I was a child.
A Space for the Kiddos:
Even though I decided to go with a very monochromatic colour palette for decorating this year, I know how much I loved a colourful christmas tree as a kid, so this year, we put a third tree in the basement for all of our kids’ special holiday ornaments. Many of them are vintage-inspired, and the bright colours just make this little tree pop! I truly love how this more traditional set up turned out. Although, the grey tree does add a bit of a modern twist!
Whole-Home Festive:
Last but not least, I also do a little bit of decorating in our bedrooms, because I love having those festive touches throughout the whole home. Last summer we painted one of the walls in Isla and Ben’s shared room to be a chalk wall, which made decorating their space super easy this year! A chalk christmas tree, a few snowflakes, and the cutest rainbow garland from Michael’s craft store were all that was needed! I didn’t do much in Molly’s room, but I did add a DIY wreathe above her crib, and the Pottery Barn Kids Holiday Doll from several years ago makes a sweet addition.

In our bedroom, I decided to add some festive chalk art above the bed, and found the most gorgeous garland at Michael’s Craft Store; this is probably the most realistic looking garland I have ever found, and I am absolutely loving how it looks with the chalkboard. I also decided to go with the words “comfort and joy”, as these have been my go-to words for the year.
