I feel like this post has been a long time coming, and truthfully, if life hadn’t been so hectic over the past several months, I definitely would have posted sooner! I have had so many comments and requests for a tutorial for the feature wall in our master bedroom – so here it is! Along with a few other favourite items that we have added to the room since we began our refresh in the summer.
Every good reveal post needs a “before” and “after” picture, so here you go. Truthfully, the room really wasn’t that bad before – it just wasn’t my style. The grey was nice, but a little too dark for my taste, so my overall goal was to create a lighter and airier space for us to enjoy.
The first step in our master bedroom refresh was to paint the entire room white. We chose Behr’s Polar Bear White, which is a little on the cool side, but works well with the vibe I was hoping to create. Unfortunately painting over the darker grey meant we needed to do three coats (much to Jeff’s dismay), but I am really happy with the colour choice and how it turned out. I’m lucky I have a husband who enjoys painting! It always amazes me how quickly a coat of paint can transform a space.
The second step was the feature wall behind our bed. I am a HUGE fan of wainscotting and shiplap; I just love adding those textural details to a room. However, I wasn’t really sure what direction to go with in our bedroom at first. I debated shiplap, which would definitely have suited the theme we have going in our house right now, and I also debated a half wall of Board and Batten, but I just couldn’t make a decision. I wanted the farmhouse feel without covering the entire wall, but because the ceiling in our room is an a-line, the actual wall is only 8 feet, and I didn’t think the Board and Batten would look the way I envisioned. I spent a lot of time on Pinterest searching, and finally decided to go with single boards, all the way to the ceiling. It was the perfect compromise and I love how it turned out.
It was also the EASIEST bedroom DIY ever. Seriously. Here’s a list of materials we used:
- Behr’s Polar Bear White Paint in Eggshell Finish
- Two Alexandria Moulding 1/2-inch x 3-1/2-inch x 8 ft. Primed Fibreboard Base ValuPak’s (20 boards total) from Home Depot
- Air-nailer & nails
- nail filler/drywall compound
- caulking gun & silicon sealant
Once we had our supplies, and after the wall was painted, we were able to finish the entire project in an afternoon/evening. We first placed boards on both sides of the wall as well as the top and bottom, to frame the entire wall. Then we measured out equal sections across the entire length of the wall so the boards would be equally spaced. Once we had those markings in place, we trimmed the boards to the appropriate height, and secured them to the wall with the air-nailer.
Because the boards were already primed, all we needed to do after securing the boards was to fill in the nail-holes with the filler/compound, and paint the boards Polar Bear White to match the walls. The final step in the process was to caulk all of the boards where they met the wall so there were no visible gaps or spaces. The longest step in the process, outside of painting the entire room, was just waiting for things to dry so we could move along to the next step.
I am so happy with how this project turned out. It’s exactly what I was hoping for, and I love that it has that modern farmhouse feel, without being expected.
Once the wall was finished, there were still a few more details that needed to be added to really pull the room together. I already had bedding, which I purchased at HomeSense last year, and we have a really cool vintage dresser that I bought from a good friend of mine who refurbishes older pieces. We also added two wardrobes from Ikea, storage baskets, and a full-length mirror to add a bit more storage and functionality to the room.
The two pieces that really helped complete the look however, were the rug from Orian Rugs, and the chandelier from Troy Lighting.
The rug, for those of you wondering, is the Saffron Heriz Soft White area rug with Braided Fringe in the 8 X 11 size. Our room is quite spacious so I knew I needed something large enough to really fill the area appropriately. This rug adds the perfect amount of colour and texture to the space, and is so plush. I love the way it brightens the room, and also how the colours pop in the otherwise neutral space. It’s obvious as well that this rug is very well made, and I know it’s going to stand the test of time in our home.
The chandelier from Troy Lighting is called the Delacroix, and I am seriously in awe of how special this light fixture is. Once again, because the room is so spacious, and we have the A-line ceiling, I knew that our light fixture needed to be large enough to hold it’s own in the bedroom as a focal point. I also wanted something that had a modern farmhouse vibe, with a bit of glam to it as well, since it’s the master bedroom. When I came across the Delacroix on the Troy Lighting website I immediately fell in love and knew it would be the perfect fixture for our space. I love that it is reminiscent of a traditional chandelier, but has the distressed look of an old farmhouse fixture. It was also surprisingly easy to assemble and install, and I am so thrilled with how the chandelier completes the space.
For some finishing touches, I added new curtains from Urban Barn, throw pillows from Kaekoo Shop, a textured throw blanket from Rust & Re’styled, and a faux eucalyptus wreath from Target’s Heart & Hand with Magnolia line. The rattan baby bassinet was an absolute steal which I found on a buy and sell, and our bed frame was a hand-me-down from my parents that we haven’t really done much with. I love mixing old and new details in a space, and I think my version of “rustic glam” came together really well!
I am always brainstorming and thinking up my next project, so a future project for this space will be to add shiplap and an exposed, rustic beam to the ceiling. I’m not sure when this will happen, but I can dream, can’t I?
What are some big projects, or dream projects, you have in mind for your home? How would you describe or define your home style?
